Beautiful Day for a Swim!

The following is from Kim:
We saw this little guy crossing from one side of the lake to the other, enjoying the swim and getting away from the bugs. I didn’t catch the loon in my shots, but a loon followed the bear closely, as curious as we were to see what the bear was going to do. Would he stop at the little island? No! He passed it by, swimming another football field to the South shore where he ambled out and was lost in the forest once again.
Hope everyone gets a chance to get out and enjoy the weather this weekend!

Neighbor Deer

Summer is in full swing and the wildlife is loving it. Like this guy has been visiting our house all week. While I (Alisha) try to get him to leave because I don’t want him to eat my flowers I have to still laugh because he is a persistent little guy. He seems to enjoy hiding behind trees and peering around to see if I leave!
Hope everyone gets out to enjoy the sunshine. Have a great week!

Hello Neighbor!

Here's a little reminder to bring in any bird feeders you might have still in the yard.
Kim and Tony had a visitor today who was nice enough to remind them! With the late spring and no berries yet, this guy or gal was obviously looking for a little snack!
Have a great week everyone!

Lutsen Block Party!!

It’s almost that time of year again- time for the Lutsen Block Party!
Music, vendors and food, what more could you ask for?
Everyone is welcome, hope to see you all there!!

Onion River

This time of year is busy in real estate so it’s difficult for the TimberWolff pack to check out the rivers and waterfalls that are so amazing this time of year! Luckily for us, our friends David and Paula Knight sent us this video of the Onion River from last weekend. Wow is that river raging, and probably will remain so for some time. The inland lakes are just starting to thaw! Head North for Fishing Opener and instead of fishing, plan to check out the abundant rivers and waterfalls along the North Shore of Lake Superior! Or bring your ice fishing gear, most folks are betting on Ice Out after the Opener! Enjoy your week and hope to see you all Up North Soon!

Spring is here!

Spring has sprung! Even though there is still ice on the lakes and a lot of snow over the hill spring is in full force. The rivers are roaring with spring runoff and the summer birds are coming back! Check out these two Trumpeter Swans out that Kim spotted. Luckily there was open water for them! I bet they are wondering what’s up with all the ice! Hope everyone gets out to enjoy the spring weather!

Rain brings Spring Melt!

Well the rainstorms we got this weekend definitely put a dent into the snowpack and the rivers show it! This was Temperance River on Sunday. By Sunday morning we had already gotten an inch and a half of rain! That with yesterdays sunshine really made it seem more like spring. While there is still a lot of snow in the woods it’s finally melting and the ice on the lakes is starting to show signs it’s going out. Hopefully the warm temps predicted this week come and we can put away our shovels and break out the lawn chairs!

Signs of Spring

Even though spring has brought with it a lot of snow this year we are still seeing subtle signs that the changing of seasons is happening. There are flowers starting to grow thru the ice and snowbanks. But most obvious is the rivers- with the last storm we had and all the rain the rivers have broken open and are putting on a show like Cross River. This video was today and I think it will only get better as more snow melts in the woods. Definitely worth a trip to see, but be careful when you explore them, there’s many places that have ice.
Have a great week everyone!

The Never Ending Winter

The following is from Kim,
Well this certainly is the winter that doesn’t want to go away! We are nearing a Tait Lake area record snowfall in excess of 161 inches with the coming snow tomorrow. It seems every other day there’s snow.  The lake is still feet thick with ice, and covered with snow. Temps aren’t warming enough to start melting, although there are buds on the trees so we know there is hope that the frost is coming out of the ground and a thaw is near.  This is the time of years that birds migrate for their “Spring” nesting, and the wildlife are no doubt snuggling in with their babies during the recent cold streak.  We are getting a little stir crazy in the cabin, so evening ATV rides and morning walks are a necessity! Enjoy the Spring landscapes, we are betting the ice will NOT be out for Opener this year!
Have a great week everyone!

Pileated Woodpecker in the neighborhood

As the snow has been melting I (Alisha) have been wandering around in our backyard with my son looking at the creeks. While the creeks look the same I have noticed quite a few trees our resident Pileated Woodpecker has decided looked good. I have heard him all winter pecking away but wasn’t quite sure where he was, and only saw him every so often as he flew from one area to another. Now we know he wasn’t far. Check out the pile of woodchips at the base of the tree, honestly it gives me a headache to think how hard he (or she) hit the tree with his beak to make it. But given that they are the 3rd largest woodpecker in the world I suppose it is no big deal for them.
Hope everyone gets a chance to get out and enjoy the woods this weekend!

Peek A Boo!

The deer that visit our yard are getting pretty comfortable climbing the banks to try to get the feeders on the deck. They don’t even run now when you walk outside, they simply wait to see what we have. I (Alisha) am just waiting to look out the window and see them on the deck! Hope everyone has a great week and enjoys the sunshine.

Traffic Jam

You never know what might be around the corner, like this deer who was running down the highway on Thursday. He (or she) obviously didn’t want to jump into the deep snow in the ditches so it ran down the highway waiting for a driveway. I (Alisha) followed it for awhile hoping we wouldn’t meet another car and thankfully it finally decided to jump into the ditch off the road. We are supposed to get another large storm this weekend so enjoy the sunshine while you can! Have a great weekend everyone.
Snow

Pretty snow in the woods!

If you haven’t taken the time to drive in the woods you should, The amount of snow is impressive! I (Alisha) drove up the Sawbill today to take a look and couldn’t believe how deep it is in the woods. While the winter wonderland scene is beautiful all I can think about is once it all starts melting we are in for a messy spring.
The weather is supposed to be warm and sunny this weekend, I hope everyone gets a chance to get out and enjoy it!!

Hungry Deer

These guys (and gals) heard me open my shed yesterday morning to fill the bird feeders. By the time I got to my deck and turned around this is what I saw. These two feeders have been claimed by the deer and even though the birds never have a chance to get the seed I continue to fill them simply because I almost feel bad for the deer this winter with all the snow. Almost everyone on our street feeds birds so these deer just walk up and down the street listening for seeds being poured into feeders and never wander too far, they even sleep in our backyard. I have the feeling they are as ready for Spring as we are.
Have a great week everyone!

Ready for Spring!

This is the perfect example of when you’re sick of winter but can’t stop yourself from playing in it! We got another round of snow last night but the amount of snow is hard to determine due to the winds. At this point with all the snow we have gotten I think instead of measuring amounts we all judge the amount by whether its plowable or not.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Wildlife

Sneaky Squirrel!

As winter has progressed the bird feeders I (Alisha) have out in different areas seem to have been claimed by certain animals. For example this squirrel has gotten pretty comfortable at this feeder to the point that he doesn’t even care if you walk up near the feeder, he just sits there. Chickadees sit and chirp at him and he never moves.  Eventually he decides he should leave if I lean on the railing and he always jumps to the same branch of the nearby tree, runs up it and starts yelling, most likely telling me to leave so he can go back to eating (turn up the volume to hear him). While the birds aren’t his biggest fan I think the deer and grouse think it’s great because this little guy is messy and all the extra seeds end up on the ground. And I have to admit watching him jump to the branch makes me laugh every time.
We are supposed to get 3-5 inches of snow tomorrow so I am sure he is making sure he has snacks for the weekend!
Hope everyone gets a chance to get enjoy the snow! Have a great weekend!

Whats around the Corner?

You never know what might be just over the next hill or corner when your driving in the woods, like this beauty Kim saw recently.  With all the snow it’s a lot easier for animals to wander down the plowed roads so remember to take your time and keep an eye out for wildlife!
Enjoy the week everyone!
